‘Software developers don’t need to be told that the ‘mongo’ in MongoDB means humongous (and the DB is database), it’s just one of those things that’s obvious. The company itself is an open source NoSQL cross-platform document-oriented database company favouring dynamic schemas. But what does that really mean in simple terms?Firstly, NoSQL. This database technology encompasses an assortment of different database machineries. It was developed in response to a rise in the volume of data stored about users, objects and products, the frequency in which this data is accessed, plus its performance and processing needs. NoSQL is an alternative approach to relational ‘tabular’ databases. Secondly, the open source cross-platform element we will assume is self-explanatory. Document-oriented is orientation to, well, documents. So lastly dynamic schemas, which are not as complicated as they sound.
